"Dan Buettner: The Secrets to a Happier, Healthier, Longer Life" at Quail Hollow Club, May 8, 2013

Northwestern Mutual hosted Dan Buettner, Founder and CEO of Blue Zones, as he spoke to our audience on how to live longer, happier and healthier by optimizing their lifestyle and surroundings.

Dan Buettner is an explorer, New York Times bestselling author and National Geographic Fellow. His New York Times Sunday Magazine article, "The Island Where People Forget to Die", was the second most popular article of 2012. He founded Blue Zones, a company that puts the world's best practices in longevity and well-being to work in people's lives. Buettner's National Geographic cover story on longevity, "The Secrets of Living Longer", was one of their top-selling issues in history and made him a finalist for a National Magazine Award. His books The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who've Lived The Longest (2008) and Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way (2010) have appeared on many bestseller lists and were both featured on Oprah.

In 2009, Buettner and his partner, AARP, applied principles of The Blue Zones to Albert Lea, Minnesota and successfully raised life expectancy and lowered health care costs. He is currently working with Healthways to implement the program in three beach cities near Los Angeles, California and towns across the state of Iowa. Their strategy focuses on optimizing the health environment instead of individual behavior change. Writing in Newsweek, Harvard University's Walter Willet called the results "stunning."

Buettner also holds three world records in distance cycling and has won an Emmy Award for television production.

Steve Forbes and John Schlifske on
"Econo-ME: Ensuring Your Financial Security in the New Normal”

Northwestern Mutual hosted a speaker series with Steve Forbes, chairman and editor in chief of Forbes Media and John Schlifske, Northwestern Mutual chairman and CEO. The three day tour saw over 4,000 attendees in total and included panel discussions in Miami and Palm Beach, FL; Washington, DC; Hartford, CT; Raleigh and Charlotte, NC; and Milwaukee, WI. In Charlotte, where there were over 400 in attendance, Steve and John discussed their thoughts on the economy, the markets, and how inpiduals and business owners can ensure financial security in the new normal. Key insights presented at the events were:

  • Managing risk is the cornerstone of financial security for individuals and families in today’s economy. According to Schlifske, a foundation of risk management is the key to protecting yourself and those you care about against the financial challenges that occur when people live too long, die too soon or become sick or injured.
  • Unforeseen threats will continue to affect our national economy. Natural disasters such as the earthquake in Japan or unrest in the Middle East impact today’s consumers. However, Schlifske and Forbes agree that our nation’s economy will continue to overcome these obstacles in the long-term based on our markets and infrastructure.
  • The fundamentals of financial security to build wealth include long-term savings. Forbes recommends that consumers stick with the basics such as putting money away week after week and working with a trusted advisor on a holistic plan.
